Health Concerns, Medical Diagnoses, and Your Student

If your student has a medical diagnosis, or you have a health concern regarding your student, please let the school nurse know.  Keeping the nurse informed about your student helps the school keep them safe and healthy in the school environment.  The health office is a source of information and education for you.  Please do not hesitate to contact the nurse if you have questions about your student’s health needs in school.

When to Keep a Child Home with Illness

Children should attend school on a daily basis.  Good attendance promotes academic success.  It is sometimes difficult to know when to send a child to school and when to keep them home.  If your child has a fever, it is not a good idea to give them medicine like Tylenol or Motrin and send them to school because as soon as the medicine wears off, the fever may return.  To prevent the spread of infection and to keep your student safe, you will be called to pick up your student if they are showing signs and symptoms of illness.

Please keep your student home and contact the child’s doctor for one or more of the following symptoms:

1. Fever of 100.4° F (38° C) or greater taken by mouth.  Your child must be fever free for 24 hours to return to school.  
2. Severe sore throat and feeling ill.
3. Sore throat with exposure to a Strep throat infection.
4. Vomiting and/or diarrhea within the last 24 hours.  Please wait until vomiting/diarrhea have stopped for at least 24 hours before sending your child back to school.  
5. Severe ear pain or fluid draining from the ear.
6. New cough and feeling ill.
7. Body aches.
8. Honey-crusted sores around the nose or mouth or rash on other body parts.
9. Red, runny, itchy eyes.

A student must be fever, diarrhea, and vomit-free for 24 hours before they return to school.

Cuando un Estudiante Debe Quedarse en Casa

Los niños deben asistir la escuela cada día. Es importante para el éxito académico. Sin embargo, a veces es difícil saber cuando enviarle a un niño a la escuela y cuando mantenerlo en casa. Si su niño está con fiebre, no es una buena idea darle un medicamento como Tylenol o Motrin y enviarlo a la escuela. Después de un rato, el medicamento dejará de funcionar y la fiebre regresará. Para prevenir infección y enfermedades en la escuela, si su niño está enfermo en la escuela, la enfermera lo llamaría a usted para llevarlo al niño a casa.

Favor de no enviar a su niño a la esuela y llamarlo al doctor con uno o más de estas síntomas:

1. Fiebre más de 100.4 F (38C). Su hijo debe estar sin fiebre por lo menos 24 horas antes de regresar a la escuela. 
2. Mucho dolor de garganta y no se siente bien.
3. Dolor de garganta con contacto con alguién con una infección de Strep.
4. Vómito y/o diarrea dentro de las últimas 24 horas. Favor de esperar por lo menos 24 horas sin vómito o diarrea antes de regresar a la escuela.
5. Mucho dolor de los oídos o liquido saliendo del oído.
6. Tos nueva y no se siente bien.
7. Dolor del cuerpo.
8. Sarpullido alrededor la boca, en las manos o pies, o en otras partes del cuerpo.
9. Ojos rojos, ojos con secreciones, y/o picor de los ojos.

Un estudiante debe estar sin fiebre, vómito, y diarrea por lo menos 24 horas antes de regresar a la escuela.

If you find your student is frequently asking to stay home from school, if they are falling behind, or appear anxious about school, or if there does not appear to be physical symptoms, please contact the school nurse and your healthcare provider to discuss your concerns.

Si usted se nota de que su hijo está pidiendo quedarse en casa con frecuencia, si está retrasado con su trabajo de la escuela, si tiene ansiedad por venir a la escuela, o si no hay síntomas fisicas de su hijo pero está diciendo que sí hay, favor de llamar a la enfermera o a su médico.

The health office may administer medications to a child at school.  Please note the following process if you are considering having a student take medications with the nurse at school: 

1. A parent or guardian must bring all medications and refills to the health office. 
2. The medication will only be accepted by the school nurse.  If the school nurse is not available to take the medication, the parent/guardian will be asked to return.  We recommend you call the health office prior to bringing in the medication.
3. There must be a written order from your healthcare provider on record in the health office that lists the name, dose, frequency, and reason for the medication.  You are required to have your healthcare provider send in a new order for each school year.
4. You must sign permission every year consenting to the school nurse administering medication to your child.
5. In the event that the school nurse is absent, there is no registered nurse in the building, and your child has not been assessed as a self-directed student, you will be asked to come and administer the medication to your child.

La oficina de salud puede administrar medicamentos a un niño en la escuela. Tenga en cuenta el siguiente proceso si está considerando que un estudiante tome medicamentos con la enfermera en la escuela:

1. Un padre o tutor debe traer todos los medicamentos y resurtidos a la oficina de salud.
2. El medicamento sólo estará aceptado por la enfermera de la escuela. Si la enfermera de la escuela no está disponible para tomar el medicamento, se le pedirá al padre/tutor que regrese. Le recomendamos llamar a la oficina de salud antes de traer el medicamento.
3. Debe haber una orden escrita de su médico registrada en la oficina de salud que indique el nombre, la dosis, la frecuencia y el motivo del medicamento. Debe pedirle a su médico que le envíe un nuevo pedido para cada año escolar.
4. Usted debe firmar un permiso cada año dando su consentimiento para que la enfermera de la escuela administre medicamentos a su estudiante.
5. En caso de que la enfermera de la escuela esté ausente, no haya una enfermera registrada en el edificio y su hijo no haya sido evaluado como estudiante autodirigido, se le pedirá que venga y le administre el medicamento a su hijo.

In-School Medication Order - Receta para Medicamentos en la Escuela

• You may take this form to the student’s doctor and return to the health office.  A separate form is required for each medication.  Your healthcare provider may also use their own form if they prefer.

• If your student needs an inhaler or other medication during an outside activity, you will need to communicate with the health office and have your doctor complete this form.  It is important that the school knows this information.  You may take this form to the student’s doctor and return to the health office.  A separate form is required for each medication.
